2017-11-02
This half-day workshop will focus on both the aggregate and flow outputs from recent censuses.Aggregate data provide area counts, usually of individuals or households with particular characteristics. Flow data is a special type of data about flows between an origin and destination; examples include migration data, commuting data, movements associated with a second residence or journeys to school.
This workshop will include:
- - an introduction concerning the census and the outputs available through UK Data Service
- - overview of the Census, and specifically aggregate and flow data demonstration of both the InFuse and WICID interfaces hands-on exercises using InFuse and WICID interfaces opportunity to use our older interface, Casweb, which provides access to data from the 1971, 1981,1991 and 2001 censuses
- - opportunities for participants to ask the presenters questions about their own use of census aggregate and flow data
£15 - UK registered students
£30 - Staff - UK academic institutions and research centres, ESRC funded researchers, UK registered charity and voluntary organisations, staff - public sector and government.
£75 - All other participants including commercial organisations and non-UK individuals.

New time series of inter-regional and inter-county migration estimates now online
2010-02-12
The first in a series of new data sets from the ESRC-funded Combining Migration Data in England and Wales project is now available to access from . The project, recently completed by James Raymer, Peter Smith and Corrado Giulietti at the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), has produced several datasets at regional, county and ONS local authority classification Group levels, which cross tabulate age, sex, ethnicity and employment status variables. These data are available for time series ranging from 1991 to 2007.For detailed information on the datasets and methodology used to produce the estimates, a PowerPoint presentation given by James can be accessed here and the final project report can be accessed here. New CIDER Migration Classification Geography Available
2009-12-16
A geodemographic district level classification based upon migration variables is now available as a new geography in . The classification has been developed by CIDER as a new framework for analysing migration flows. For full details, read the associated working paper here.New UK time series estimates added
2009-10-12
Two sets of inter-NUTS2 region migration estimates for the whole UK have been added to WICID. The first mid 1999 to mid 2007; the second calendar year 2000 to 2007. These data have been created as part of the ESPON DEMIFER project and enable sub-national, inter-regional migration flows to be examined for a consistent time series for the first time. DEMIFER NUTS2 estimates These data were created as part of the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON) 13 programme. One of the applied research projects under the ESPON 13 programme, known as DEMIFER (DEmographic and MIgratory Flows affecting European Regions and Cities), produced a database of time-series demographic data for the 27 member states of the EU, plus 4 other European States at the NUTS2 geography.Where a time-series of UK internal migration flows were not previously available, the DEMIFER team at the University of Leeds produced a set of estimates based principally on publicly available inter district Patient Register flows (supplied by ONS), but also incorporating inter-government office region UK migration data from the National Health Service Central Register (NHSCR - also supplied by ONS) and distributions from the 2001 Census Special Migration Statistics.
DEMIFER have produced two sets of estimates - one set running from mid-year to mid-year and one set covering calendar years.
For a detailed methodology describing the exact estimation process, see Dennett, A and Rees, P. (2009) Estimates of internal migration flows for the UK, 2000-2007 - details in the Papers section of this website
* Note - as these data are estimates not all flows will be integers, some will be decimal values *
Additional 2001 commuting data added
2009-09-29
Two additional data sets have been added to WICID, which show commuting flows to Output Areas in London
- 2001 C0310 details flows from wards in London to OAs in London
- 2001 C0311 details flows from districts in England and Wales to OAs in London
Users interested in total inflows to distinct OAs in London will find that these are more reliable than the original SWS data, as they are less affected by Small Cell Adjustment.
Both sets contain a single mode-of-transport table, identical in form to that used in the original 2001 SWS Level 3.
Both sets were originally commissioned by the Greater London Authority.
2009-09-14
New 2008 migration data derived from Patient Registers have been added to the system. This now creates a time series of mid-year, rounded, migration flows between districts in England and Wales from 1999-2008. Also available to download with these data are accompanying populations at risk (see the WICID help system for details on how to download population data with your flows).2009-09-14

2004-10-21
Interaction data sets at local authority level were formally released on 21st October, 2004. They will be available through WICID shortly.CIDS have received these data sets and are in the process of adding them to WICID. More information about the data can be found via ONS and GRO(S):2004-07-21
Output area level data sets from the 2001 Census are now available through WICID.The 2001 Special Migration Statistics, Special Travel Statistics and Special Workplace Statistics are now available via WICID. Formal news about these data will be circulated within the next few days. Detailed descriptions of each data set can be found via the 'About the data' page in WICID.
Ward level data are expected to be made available before the end of July 2004.
Users should note that small cell adjustment has had a significant effect on the output area level data. Anyone wishing to generate aggregate counts for larger areas are advised to wait until ward or district level data are available. Users are also advised that these data sets are extremely large - sets of origins and destinations should be picked carefully!
2004-05-18
CIDS have taken delivery of the first origin-destination data sets from the 2001 Census, and these will be available shortly. The following data sets were released on May 7th:- SMS Level 3 - Output Area level migration data (UK)
- SWS Level 3 - Output Area level journey-to-work data (England and Wales)
- STS Level 3 - Output Area level travel data (Scotland)
1991 SWS Sets A and B available
2004-05-18
The Special Workplace Statistics Sets A and B, from the 1991 Census, are now available through WICID. Both sets contain ward-level journey-to-work flow data. Set A contains data on wards of residence, whilst Set B contains data on wards of workplaces. Both sets contain 9 tables disaggregating the flows. The data in both sets is taken from a 10% sample.2004-03-09
The SWS are now scheduled for release in stages over the period April-July 2004, starting with the Output Area level data.Full details can be found in Census News. No official news has been released regarding the SMS, although CIDS understands that it is likely to follow a similar release schedule. Users should note that we are envisaging a delay of up to two months between receipt of the data at CIDS and release via WICID, whilst we load and check the data.2004-02-02
Emergency downtime has been scheduled for February 3rd. The irwell server (on which our software runs) will be down for two hours (or more) from 9am to replace cooling fans. WICID will be unavailable during this time.Temporary problems logging in to WICID
2003-11-05
Users may have experienced problems logging in to WICID around 2:30 - 2:45pm on 5/11/03. We apologise for this fault.1981 Data sets expanded and renamed
2003-06-27
The 1981 data sets have been given revised, more useful names. In addition an extra 1981 SWS data set has been added, with more data to be added over the summer. The 1981 data sets have been renamed as follows. The set previously labelled 1981 SWS data is now labelled 1981 SWS Set C (1991 geog) (inc. pro-rate workplace unstated). This should make the use of geography in the data more obvious, and makes clear that the estimation process used to create the data set included the pro-rate redistribution of workers with 'workplace unstated' across all wards.
A further data set has been added: 1981 SWS Set C (1991 geog). Again, this has been re-estimated for the 1991 ward boundaries, but in this case no re-distribution was done of the workplace unstated category. Counts for workplace unstated, workplace overseas and no fixed workplace are available as a distinct geography type 1981 SWS other workplaces
It is intended to add some further 1981 data sets over this summer
MIMAS "At Risk" period - 1st July 2003
2003-06-23
Due to a network router upgrade taking place at Manchester Computing on Tuesday July 1st, all MIMAS services will be "at risk" from 7.30 am until 9.00am.2002-12-20
Restoration of WICID service 20th December 2002Due to a database fault, the WICID service was lost on December 17th. The system has been restored from a backup, but some inconsistencies may exist. Unfortunately, these are unlikely to be corrected until after the Christmas break. In particular, saved user queries are not available - we apologise for this problem.
We hope to restore a full service as soon as possible after January 2nd, 2003.
