The Census Interaction Data Service (CIDS) is a newly established data support unit, fitting alongside existing specialised dissemination units.
WICID (Web Based Interface to Census Interaction Data) is the software used to provide access to the interaction data.
What are interaction data?
They are data that describe changes over space; that is: flows between or within distinct locations. The most commonly used such data are migration data and commuting (or journey-to-work) data.
The interaction data sets from the UK Census has in the past been under-used. Reasons for this include:
Complexity of the data
Access software having limited features and being difficult to use
Examples
Examples of the use of migration data are included that describe characteristics of migrants from the US to the UK in the period 1990-91.
